What is Microneedling?

When home skin treatments aren't effective, but you don't want surgical procedures, consider minimally invasive treatments to rejuvenate the skin, like microneedling. At MedSuite at Castle Hills, Dr. Anam Tharoo and her experienced team are pleased to perform microneedling (collagen induction therapy) at our North Texas office with the use of the innovative Rejuvapen™ technology. Microneedling uses many fine needles to safely and effectively make micro-injuries in the needed areas of the skin. The micro-injuries trigger the body's natural production of collagen and elastin, two nutrients that improve the health and appearance of your complexion. Easily performed with other skin treatments, like serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP), microneedling may help reduce scars, pores, and stretch marks. Schedule an appointment for a consultation at MedSuite at Castle Hills to hear more about the results of microneedling and ways to personalize the treatment for your needs and goals.

What are the benefits of microneedling?

There are several benefits of microneedling, including:

  • Reduction of wrinkles and fine lines
  • Treatment of several skin irregularities, including acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, and enlarged pores
  • Customized treatment options
  • Stimulation of collagen and elastin in the skin
  • Treatments lasting 30 – 60 minutes in our state-of-the-art facility

Am I A candidate for Microneedling?

It's possible you could be a candidate for microneedling treatments if you have slight to moderate skin issues, like a decrease in elasticity or rough skin texture. Microneedling treatments may also reduce the appearance of pores, stretch marks, and scars. You need to be willing to wait a while before seeing improvements from your microneedling treatment because the collagen and elastin require a month or longer to have an effect on the complexion; however, you will develop results that look natural and gain better overall skin health.

Our Microneedling Technique

Microneedling is done in one of our office procedure rooms in about 30 – 60 minutes with local anesthesia or numbing cream if requested, but patients generally report mild or no discomfort. The skin being addressed will be cleaned before the Rejuvapen handpiece is evenly passed over the treatment area. Once the microneedling is complete, a treatment, like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or a serum with a vitamin infusion, may be applied so the nutrients can penetrate deeper into the skin. A moisturizer will be massaged in along with sunscreen since the treated skin will be sensitive after the procedure.

What Can I Expect After Microneedling?

After your treatment, you can experience light swelling and redness for about one day; however, this should subside on its own. It may take about 1 – 2 months as the collagen and elastin supply increases before you see visible changes in the appearance and health of your skin. You should schedule around 4 – 6 follow-up treatments performed every 4 – 6 weeks for the best results and long-lasting skin health.

Microneedling FAQ

How much does microneedling cost?
In your initial consultation, Dr. Tharoo will evaluate your skin and then create your custom plan. After this, she will talk about your treatment costs and the procedure. MedSuite at Castle Hills often has discounts on treatment packages, so be sure to ask about our current deals during your appointment.

What exactly is microneedling?
Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment to tighten and rejuvenate your skin. A natural fibrous protein, collagen helps your skin stay smooth, supple, and firm. Eventually, your stores of collagen are depleted, and your skin becomes less elastic and thin. Microneedling makes tiny wounds in your skin. These micro-injuries force your skin to generate new skin cell growth and increase collagen production. After a short recovery period, your complexion looks firmer, brighter, and healthier.

Can I combine other treatments with microneedling?
In the microneedling process, channels are created that help other treatments reach the deeper layers. That's why microneedling is frequently performed with other skin treatments, like vitamin-rich serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Microneedling with PRP is more commonly known as the Vampire Facial®. During your initial consultation, Dr. Tharoo can talk about which treatments may be performed along with microneedling and which best fit your skin goals.

How many treatments are recommended for optimal results?
Typically, patients get 3 – 6 treatments to get optimal results. Although, how many treatments you need will vary based on the condition of your skin and your goals. Microneedling can be performed every 4 – 6 weeks. In your consultation, Dr. Tharoo will be able to estimate how many treatments you might need after assessing your skin and listening to your goals. When you have reached your goal, Dr. Tharoo suggests scheduling touch-up sessions about twice a year.

Is microneedling safe for everyone?
In general, microneedling is safe for all skin tones and types. Since the skin injuries created are so small, there are very few side effects after the treatment. Microneedling can be performed on most areas of skin, including the arms, face, neck, chest, thighs, and calves. Microneedling is not recommended if you've taken Accutane in the last few months, as well as if you have an open wound, active skin infection, or herpes simplex. In addition, you might not be able to get microneedling if you're nursing, pregnant, or undergoing radiation therapy.
